Arjowiggins is a leading paper manufacturer with two mills based in the UK, both dating back to the 1700s.

The Stoneywood mill in Aberdeen pioneered the production of fine paper in the 1800s and now manufactures products for designers, printers and clients worldwide under well-known brands such as Conqueror, Curious Collection and Keaykolour. The Chartham mill in Kent is one of the oldest employers in the area, specialising in the production of translucent papers, in particular the Gateway range which is recognised today as the world’s leading brand of tracing paper.

The company had been trading in administration since January 2019 following insolvency proceedings against its French parent companies.

Key highlight

  • SE's investment was part of the funding package to support the existing leadership team in a management buy-out which saved 559 jobs, 450 of which were in Scotland.

Outcome

The successful funding of the MBO secured the future of the historic paper mills in Aberdeen and Kent, as well as saving 559 jobs across the UK. The business is now led by an eight-strong experienced leadership team, which is headed up by managing director Jonathan Mitchell.

This was a complex investment involving various funders who invested via debt and equity. The deal was conducted against tight timescales, driven by critical court hearings in other jurisdictions.
