In France employers’ federations and unions representing workers in the digital and consultancy sectors have signed up to a legally binding labour agreement that will mean staff have to ‘switch off’ outside office hours, meaning before 9am and after 6pm.

The country famously introduced a 35-hour week in 1999 but times have changed, thanks to the widespread introduction of smartphones.

Unions have been fighting against the culture that increasingly expects workers to check their work laptop or smartphone at any hour of the day or night.

A study found that 39% of workers and 77% of managers in the technology and consultancy sectors used their smartphones, tablets and computers for work purposes in the evenings, during weekends and even on holiday.

The new agreement means that employees must not look at work-related material on work devices, including computers and smartphones, after 6pm and employers must ensure that staff do not come under pressure to do so.
