ACAS have produced guidance on the new shared parental leave and pay regulations, due to come into force on 1 December 2014. The regulations are currently before parliament.

The effect of the new regulations is that mothers can end their maternity leave and share leave with the father of a child born on or after 5 April 2014. The leave can be taken in continuous or discontinuous blocks. Both parents will have to meet certain eligibility requirements.

ACAS suggest employers may wish to:

  • Develop a policy and consult with employees over the proposed policy;
  • Have an early and informal discussion about how employees wish to use any shared parental leave so that the leave can be planned;
