Yesterday, the HSE published a new Code for Local Authority enforcement of the Health & Safety at Work Act.
The Code adopts the current Government’s policy of attempting to remove the burden of health & safety red tape from business. The key provision stipulates that Local Authorities should reserve unannounced proactive inspections only for high risk businesses or where there has been an intelligence tip-off.
Targeting of inspections has no doubt been based on similar strategies in the past however, now that the provision has been formalised in the Code, many thousands of SMEs will be reassured to know that they are free from the threat of unannounced inspection allowing them to renew their focus on the bottom line rather than trivial health & safety issues.
