When the Information Commissioner was given new powers to fine organisations, there was much debate and discussion as to when, how and for what reasons he would use this power. The first fines have now been issued to two organisations for breaches of data security: a £60,000 fine for A4e limited in respect of a stolen unencrypted laptop and £100,000 for Hertfordshire County Council for a misdirected fax.
