Traineeships

As I approach my fourth PEAT 2 review, I’m reminded that it was one of my objectives to draft an entry for the BTrainees blog so here goes…

I spent the first 8 months of my traineeship in the Corporate team in our Edinburgh office and was able to assist with all aspects of various major transactions, including asset and share purchase and sales, joint ventures and corporate restructures. My team always made sure that I was involved in drafting all types of documents, not just the smaller ancillary ones, and it really allowed me to get a good insight into what being a corporate lawyer is all about.

I got a real buzz out of completing transactions, sometimes working late into the night to get a deal over the line (although I must say, these days were few and far between). It was always quite exciting to read about a deal in the press that I had been heavily involved in. You don’t just feel like you are an ancillary part of the team, colleagues are great at getting you involved in the complete transaction from beginning to end.

It was a very transactional seat, which suits me perfectly and if you’re considering a corporate seat then I would whole heartedly recommend it, particularly if you love the thrill of the deal!
