Tell us about your role?
As a criminal defence solicitor at Brodies, I provide advice, support and representation to clients accused of any crime in Scotland. I assist clients before an allegation is made, with a police investigation, following an arrest and interview and when court proceedings are anticipated or have begun. The team that I am a part of is available 24/7 and can be consulted by clients anywhere in the country and at any stage in the process.
What motivates you?
What motivates me the most is knowing that the work I do has a real purpose and that I play an important role in the criminal justice system. As a criminal defence solicitor, I am often representing people at some of the most difficult points in their lives and I believe it is important that everyone in that situation has someone representing their interests who will listen to them, advise and support them and make sure that they are treated fairly.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
My advice to my younger self would be to believe in myself a bit more. I would tell myself not to be so quick to second guess my decisions and not to be afraid to take a chance. Looking back, some of the decisions I questioned the most have turned out to be some of the best decisions I have made.
Morning routine
I get up in time to have breakfast with my toddler before leaving her with her dad or granda for the day. I then either get the train to Aberdeen if I am working in the office or if I have a court appearance or police interview, I will head to the relevant Sheriff court or police station.
Afternoon routine
In the afternoon I will get on with whatever work is in my diary for the day. That could be client meetings, legal research, case analysis or perusing evidence.
Evening routine
In the evening, I try to make it home to have dinner with my family. Sometimes I will go for a run or go to the gym but it depends how busy my day has been and how much energy I have left!
Why did you choose to become a criminal solicitor?
I have had an interest in the criminal justice system for as long as I can remember. When I was younger I actually wanted to be a police officer but I became particularly attracted to the advocacy side of criminal justice and the prospect of appearing in court and conducting trials really appealed to me. That ultimately led me to a career in criminal defence.
What's your top tip for someone keen to pursue a similar career?
Be brave and keep going, even when it’s tough! Criminal law can be challenging and it is a career that requires determination and resilience but it is also very rewarding. Don’t let your background, setbacks or other people’s opinions of your ability stop you from getting where you want to be.
What aspect of your role do you enjoy most, and why?
Travelling to different courts across the country. It is always nice to appear in new or smaller courts and speak to other solicitors that you haven’t met before. Each and every court building is different as well – some very old, some very new and some with very impressive architecture.
If you could swap jobs with any fictional character for a day, who would it be?
Danny Trevanion, the main character in Wild at Heart. I previously volunteered at an animal rehabilitation centre in South Africa and I loved my time there so I would absolutely jump at the chance to work as a vet on a wildlife reserve. It would certainly be a change from life as a criminal defence solicitor!
If your desk could teleport anywhere in the world, where would you work from today, and why?
I think I’d choose the Maldives. I’ve always wanted to visit and I don’t think I could complain too much if my desk was on a beach surrounded by clear waters and beautiful views.
