Nina's story

Tell us about your role

I’m a solicitor in our real estate practice in Glasgow, working with clients across Scotland, Europe and beyond on some of Scotland’s largest commercial real estate transactions. I joined Brodies as a trainee in 2022 and qualified into real estate in August 2024, having done seats in real estate, insurance and risk, and a secondment at the BBC.

Be as open as possible when it comes to your future. I used to think you had to pigeonhole yourself early in law but have quickly learned at Brodies that the best way forward is to be as open as possible to future opportunities and options.

What motivates you?

Working at Brodies means working with some of the best lawyers in Scotland. It’s therefore extremely motivating as a junior lawyer to work with the people around me, and I really enjoy being able to gain experience and insight with the support of my colleagues.

Describe the work you do in three words

Wide-ranging, people-focused and time-sensitive (somewhat cheated there with six words…!)

Apart from the necessary skills and knowledge, what other quality is essential for the role you perform?

Adaptability. Each day is completely different and whilst you might come in at 9am with a to-do list and action plan, by 9.15am you can quite easily end up needing to prioritise an entirely different workstream and essentially rip up your previous to-do list!

Morning routine

Walk to the office, usually grabbing a coffee, then log on and check emails to prioritise client work.
Keep an updated to‑do list and schedule key meetings in your diary throughout the day.
Take part in morning colleague catch‑ups to review workload and ask questions about ongoing transactions.
Draft real estate documents, leases, reports on title, contracts, based on the transactions you're working on.

Afternoon routine

Get outside for part of your lunch break, often ending up browsing the shops.
Spend the rest of lunch in the kitchen area catching up with colleagues.
Prep for afternoon client meetings and complete any necessary preparation.
Finish urgent client work before the end of the day.

Evening routine

Prep your to‑do list and note any deadlines or meetings for the next day before finishing work.
Walk home while catching up with friends or family on the phone.
Go for a run or attend a reformer Pilates class once home.
Make dinner and unwind with friends, a book, or a TV show (usually a crime drama).

What's your top tip for someone keen to pursue a similar career?

Don’t be shy about asking questions! At a junior level, it can often feel like you “should” know the answer. However, at this early stage you are never expected to know everything. There is no such thing as a silly question so don’t be afraid to ask. Working at Brodies means working with colleagues who are so supportive, friendly, and invested in your career - so make the most of it!
