I am a legal director in the employment and immigration team.

Describe the work you do in three words

Varied, challenging, intriguing.

Keep your mind on the people who are involved in the issue you are dealing with (whether that is litigation or advising a client). Be adaptable depending on their personality and their motives. Think of their reason for bringing a claim/instructing you – don’t lose sight of the “why”.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Keep asking questions and maintain an inquisitive mind.

Apart from the necessary skills and knowledge, what other quality is essential for the role you perform?

You need to be able to get clients to trust you. They need to want to talk to you and see you as someone who will help them out in a crisis. Building rapport, being interested in them and their business, and putting them at ease is essential.

Morning routine

I usually go to the gym before work so I can’t make excuses at the end of a long day.

When I get to work, I check my diary and plan my day.

Afternoon routine

My days are often quite varied. It is not unusual to work on 5 or more different client matters throughout the day. I try to split my day so that some calls are in the morning, others in the afternoon, and enough time in between to spend on the work coming out of those.

Evening routine

I like to walk home from the office – about 45 minutes – to clear my head. During the week, I usually relax by reading a book or watching TV.

Why did you choose to work in employment law?

I wanted to work in an area of law that involved a lot of interaction with people (whether on the phone or in person) and involved matters relating to individuals. Given employment law focuses almost solely on people’s working lives and the problems and disputes that arise out of that, it was a no-brainer for me.

If you could swap jobs with any fictional character for a day, who would it be?

Some sort of detective – I read a lot of Scandi noir, so someone working in Iceland in the depths of winter. But only for a day!
