Brodies has a long-standing relationship with Aberdeen City Council and continues to provide it with a full range of legal advice. Through its innovative and market leading Hydrogen Strategy, Aberdeen City Council is coordinating a project to bring a fleet of hydrogen buses and refuelling infrastructure to the city – the largest fleet of its kind in the EU.

Brodies advised on all the key project contracts –  the purchase of the vehicles (from Van Hool), the leasing of those vehicles to commercial operators (First and Stagecoach), the delivery of the refuelling infrastructure, and the generation (from electrolysis) and handling of the hydrogen gas fuel (both by BOC). The electrolyser will be grid supplied at commissioning, but the contracts allow for directly renewable power options including wind and PV.

The second project in the delivery of the strategy is the construction of a second hydrogen refuelling station (with on-site gas generation). This station will fuel at dual pressure, making it suitable for heavy and light vehicles, including cars. The project is at an early stage in terms of legal input but Brodies has been engaged in advising on commercial and contract structures.

Our role supporting Aberdeen City Council is particularly important as these are demonstration and pilot projects - unique in Scotland and unique across the EU in terms of scale.
