Natalie Gamble founded the UK’s first specialist fertility law firm NGA Law in 2009, and co-founded non-profit surrogacy agency Brilliant Beginnings in 2013. She and her team have represented families in 34 reported cases which have shaped the law in relation to surrogacy, donor conception and assisted reproduction, including the very first international surrogacy case in 2008. She chairs the UK and Ireland LGBT Family Law Institute, co-chairs the international committee of the Academy of Adoption and Assisted Reproduction Attorneys, and sits on the Law, Policy and Ethics Special Interest Group of the British Fertility Society.

She is a passionate champion of LGBT+ families and parents through surrogacy and has contributed to progressive law and policy changes (including on same-sex legal parenthood, embryo storage, maternity leave, LGBT-inclusive passport guidance, mitochondrial donation, and emergency measures to rescue surrogate babies during COVID and the Ukraine war). She has been a leading voice in the campaign for surrogacy law reform since 2007, and is widely published, including in the British Medical Journal.

Natalie has been nominated for the Stonewall Hero of the Year award, named in the Independent on Sunday’s Pink List as one of the 100 most influential gay and lesbian people in the UK, and invited to meet the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street.

Morag McEwan specialises in family and child law. She has been instructed in cases involving all aspects of divorce, cohabitation, contact, residence, relocation and child abduction. She has experience in cases relating to human rights and the rights of the child. Morag has been instructed in several petitions under the 1980 Hague Child Abduction Convention and has recently appeared as junior counsel in the UK Supreme Court in one such petition.

She is an undergraduate course tutor at the University of Edinburgh, is in the process of co-editing “Child and Family Law” Stair Memorial Encyclopaedia Reissue and is a Law Reporter for Session Cases.

The Hon. Mrs Justice Theis DBE

Mrs Justice Theis DBE, was called to the Bar by Gray’s Inn in 1982 and took Silk in 2003. She was appointed a Recorder in 2000 and was approved to sit as a deputy High Court Judge.

From 2005 to 2010 she was head of Field Court Chambers and was Chair of the Family Law Bar Association in 2008 and 2009. In 2010 she was appointed to be a High Court Judge.

In 2011 the President of the Family Division appointed her a Family Division Liaison Judge on the South Eastern Circuit with responsibility for Kent, Surrey and Sussex and in 2017 for London and Thames Valley.

Since 2018 she has chaired the Family Procedure Rules Committee and the Family Justice Council and is the lead judge in relation to applications under the HFEA 2008.

Mrs Justice Theis was appointed as the Senior Family Liaison Judge for a four-year period from October 2018. This is in addition to her role as the Family Division Liaison Judge for London.
