Based in Inverness, Sarah is a highly experienced family lawyer who leads our family law team in the Highlands and Islands. Sarah and her colleagues support clients from across the Highlands and Islands, including Inverness, Ross-shire, Speyside, Shetland, Orkney, the Isle of Skye and the Western Isles. She advises clients on all aspects of family law including divorce and separation and is one of only two accredited specialists in child law and family law mediation in the region.
Having trained in Aberdeen, Sarah worked in Edinburgh and gained invaluable experience dealing with a varied family law caseload before returning to the Highlands in 2012. Sarah appears in courts across the Highlands and Islands and as a recognised specialist in child law, Sarah is regularly appointed by the courts as a child welfare reporter.
Sarah is trained in the collaborative method of dispute resolution, mediation and is a notary public.

The Rt Hon Lady Wise (Morag Wise KC) is a graduate of the University of Aberdeen [LLB Hons, LLD (Hon)] and of McGill University, Montreal ( LLM). She qualified as a solicitor in 1989 and worked for an Edinburgh firm between 1987 and 1992, dealing in general civil litigation. She called to the bar in 1993 and practised in civil litigation, specialising in family law. In 2005 she became Queen’s Counsel and from 2008 sat part time as a Temporary Judge while still in practice. She was appointed as a Senator of the College of Justice in 2013 and sat as a Judge of the Employment Appeal Tribunal for three years until December 2018.
Lady Wise served as one of the two Family Court judges in the Court of Session prior to her appointment to the Inner House (appellate court) in January 2022. She continues to chair the Family Law Committee of the Scottish Civil Justice Council and has been an International Hague Network Judge since 2017. Lady Wise is also President of the Scottish Tribunals with effect from 1 May 2023.

Dr Anne Woodhouse is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist with Solution Psychology based in Inverness. She has over 25 years of experience providing expert reports in child and family law. A graduate of the universities of Edinburgh and Cardiff, Anne has worked in upstate New York, London, Swansea, Edinburgh and Inverness. She specialised in child and family psychology during her doctoral training, moving to work in children’s services within the NHS, reaching the position of lead psychologist for CAMHS in NHS Highland before leaving the public sector to focus on private practice. Dr Woodhouse has special interests in parenting by vulnerable adults, neurodevelopment, attachment theory and systemic practice.

Dr Katherine Edward received her Ph.D, focusing research on sexual assault and abuse, in 1993. Following some time in academia she completed a further Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2002 specialising in work with young people and the experience of looked after children.
Following periods of work within NHS child psychology and sexual abuse services, an independent fostering agency, and private therapy setting, Dr Edward now focuses solely on provision of clinical reports to assist the court.
Working in this setting for over 18 years now Dr Edward has provided numerous reports to the Courts. She frequently gives evidence in a range of Judicial settings, and has spoken at a mixture of conferences and trainings, including contributing to the Judicial Institute training in Scotland since 2011. Her assessments and training focus on a range of issues including child development, trauma, family conflict, witness testimony/vulnerability, contact, permanence and adoption.

Will is a partner in the Family & Divorce team at Kingsley Napley and advises clients on the full range of family law issues arising on the breakdown of relationships. He has a particular focus on representing US nationals and recently delivered training on international enforcement to the family law section of the Illinois State Bar.

Kate Dowdalls KC was appointed Sheriff Principal of South Strathclyde Dumfries and Galloway in June 2023. From 2018 until 2023, she was a Scottish Law Commissioner, leading the Aspects of family law project. She oversaw the work leading to publication of the SLC’s Report on Cohabitation in November 2022.
After a 15 year career as a solicitor, Kate called to the Scottish Bar in 2000. She took silk in 2013. She specialised in family law, representing parties in divorce actions and cohabitation claims, residence and contact disputes, international child abduction, cases concerning children in need of compulsory care and applications for adoption and permanence orders. As senior counsel she was also instructed in fatal accident inquiries and represented a core participant in the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry. Kate has represented parties in the Sheriff Court, the Sheriff Appeal Court, the Outer and Inner Houses of the Court of Session and the UK Supreme Court.

Ruth is a researcher in the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research, based at the University of Glasgow. Ruth’s research considers the relationships between institutions and individuals, with a particular focus on responses to men’s violence against women and children.
Ruth’s recent work in the area of domestic abuse and child contact includes “Improving Justice in Child Contact”, a five country European project looking at children’s participation rights in proceedings, and “Constructions of children and parents during the reform of family law in Scotland”, looking at discourses around children and domestic abuse during the parliamentary process of the now Children (Scotland) Act 2020.
Ruth is part of team that recently published “Domestic Abuse and Child Contact: The Interface Between Criminal and Civil Proceedings”. This study comprised a survey and interviews with legal practitioners to examine child contact proceedings in the context of domestic abuse in Scotland.
