We have updated on previous Written Questions at Westminster on the topic of the reform of society lotteries. A December 2018 answer from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport ("DCMS") said a response to the 2018 consultation would be available during the first half of 2019. Here is the latest Written Question and update from DCMS.
Piri Patel asked:-
To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, what assessment he has made of the potential contribution of the reform of society lotteries to (a) charities and (b) good causes in the next five years; and when he plans to respond to his consultation on that reform.
Mims Davies (for DCMS) answered:-
We hope to respond to the consultation before the summer recess and the response will include a discussion of the key points raised by stakeholders including Camelot (the National Lottery operator).
Following the publication of the Government's response we will provide a copy Camelot's response to the consultation to the House of Commons library.
The consultation in a nutshell for society lotteries
During summer 2018 there was a consultation on increasing the permitted size for an individual society lottery. Currently the size and prize limits on society lotteries mean that there is the need for larger lotteries to operate an umbrella model with a number of societies (charities or CICs) rather than a single legal entity.
