The importance of control of trademarks and image rights has featured prominently in the press recently, as the appointment of Jose Mourinho as manager of Manchester United was delayed because Chelsea retained Mourinho's image rights, which Manchester United desperately wanted.

It emerged that Chelsea also owned the Special One's name as a trademark, and was therefore in a position to demand a significant sum from United in return for transferring those rights. Why are these rights so important?
