This is the temporary ban on forfeiture of a commercial lease in England & Wales, in accordance with the Coronavirus Act 2020.

The existing ban was due to come to an end on 31 December 2020, meaning landlords could terminate the lease by effecting a peaceable re-entry of the premises where sufficient rent was outstanding.

The extension is until 31 March 2021. Government has confirmed today (9 December 2020) that this will be the final extension to this ban. The impetus is for landlords and tenants to communicate with one another between now and 31 March 2021 to find resolution.

The extension also includes restricting winding up petitions. More information about what landlords can still do may be found in our previous blog here.
