UPDATE
Since we wrote this blog, there have been updates to the national minimum wage and national living wage rates, and also to the living wage set by the Living Wage Foundation. Last week the Low Pay Commission opened a consultation seeking views on the existing rates of the national minimum wage and the national living wage and specifically the rates that should apply from April 2017. Views are also sought on issues surrounding compliance and enforcement.
The consultation, which closes on 29 July 2016, can be viewed here.
From April 2017 all of the rates, including the national living wage, will be uprated at the same time.
The Low Pay Commission will recommend to the government in October 2016 the level of rates to apply from April 2017.
Current national minimum wage rates
- National living wage: £7.20
- Standard adult rate (aged 21-24): £6.70
- Development rate (workers aged 18-20): £5.30
- Young worker's rate (workers aged 16-17 who are not apprentices): £3.87
- Apprenticeship rate: £3.30
Rates from October 2016
- National living wage: £7.20
- Standard adult rate (aged 21-24): £6.95
- Development rate (workers aged 18-20): £5.55
- Young worker's rate (workers aged 16-17 who are not apprentices): £4.00
- Apprenticeship rate: £3.40
