This webinar provided an overview of local authority obligations and processes under RIPSA, including:
- the statutory framework and codes of practice;
- key concepts such as intrusive surveillance, directed surveillance and covert human intelligence sources;
- authorisation requirements, including the legal tests of necessity and proportionality;
- the relationship with the Investigatory Powers Act in respect of communications data; and
- RIPSA’s application to the monitoring of social media.
We also considered case studies raising difficult issues, and explain how those could be handled in practice.
This session covered a wide range of issues, making it valuable for all local authority lawyers and officers who deal with investigatory powers, whatever their level of experience with RIPSA.
