September 2019 will mark the 8th World Alzheimer's Month (which includes World Alzheimer's Day on 21 September). This is an international campaign to raise awareness and support those suffering from dementia. We will be posting a series of blogs throughout the month to provide you with information on how you can help yourself and your loved ones.
Dementia is a term used to refer to a variety of illnesses and conditions which result in an impairment of brain function and a decline in intellectual functioning. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia. Early symptoms of dementia can include memory loss, difficultly performing familiar tasks, problems with language and changes in personality. There are currently estimated to be over 46 million people worldwide living with dementia. The number of people affected is set to rise to over 131 million by 2050.
We can provide advice and assistance for those suffering from dementia and their families. However, to avoid the situation where difficulties can arise, we encourage everyone to plan early.
What do you need to think about when planning for your future? Why is it important to have a will? Who would make decisions for you if you lost capacity? Now is the time to ask yourself these questions and plan ahead.
During World Alzheimer's Month we will provide more information about particular areas concerning later life planning and how we can help.
