Tell us about your role
A finance team in any business, but especially in a law firm, plays a key role in keeping the organisation safe and financially secure. We're responsible for the controls, the day-to-day operations that bring money into the business, and the financial reporting that supports decision-making. Beyond that, I believe finance should help drive growth by acting as a trusted business partner. It's about helping the firm grow in the right areas and enabling our lawyers to focus on what they do best.
Who has been your biggest influence?
I'd say my biggest influence has been my dad. I certainly inherited his love of sport and competitive nature, which has had both its advantages and disadvantages. More importantly, though, he instilled in me a really strong work ethic, which I've carried forward throughout both my personal life and my career.
What advice would you give your younger self?
The advice I'd give to my younger self comes from a quote by Clive Woodward: "Control the controllables." There will always be decisions made that you don't agree with, people you don't get on with, and situations you don't fully understand. What you can control is your own actions and how you respond to those challenges.
If you weren't doing your current job, what career would you choose?
If I had to choose another job, my younger self would definitely have said fighter pilot. More realistically, though, I'd love to be a caddie on a professional golf tour.
Is there a book that has changed your life?
I'm not a big reader, so instead of a book, I'd say my passport has probably had the biggest impact on my life. I've always loved travelling and have done so throughout my life. I enjoy visiting new places, meeting new people, and experiencing different cultures, and those experiences have shaped my perspective in many ways.
