The effectiveness of public inquiries has at times been subject to criticism, whether rightly or wrongly, given the lack of powers to enforce recommendations that have been made. Some inquiries have recently taken to monitoring the implementation of their recommendations and the Statutory Inquiries Committee has also addressed these concerns taking the view that implementation of recommendations should be monitored.
In this webinar, Christine O'Neill KC and Caoimhe Hunter Blair discussed:
- the legal status of findings and recommendations made by inquiries;
- the approaches taken by recent inquiries, including the Manchester Arena Inquiry, the Infected Blood Inquiry and the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, when making recommendations;
- changes proposed by the UK Parliament's Statutory Inquiries Committee; and
- what can be done if you are concerned about the findings and recommendations that an inquiry may make or has made.
