How did you become managing partner?
Following my partnership career starting, I was asked to lead the litigation practice area and two years ago I was elected to the managing partner role. I've had a fantastic career at Brodies with many people supporting me and giving me lots of good advice along the way.
What is the best part of your job?
The best part of the day job is definitely seeing people progress through the organisation. We have people that have been with us for over 40 years. That for me is a real show of success that people trust their careers and long careers with Brodies.
What is something people might not know about you?
One thing that people don't know about me despite my best efforts to tell the whole world is that I am a double World Cup winner. In 2007, I went over to Paris as part of the lawyer's Rugby World Cup team and to all of our surprise we won it. We then defended the title because the winners had to host the tournament the following year and again we won the title in Scotland, making me a double World Cup winner.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in law?
If someone's considering a career in law, I would say that it's really important that you enjoy what you do every day. If you find after a year or so, having tried something, that you don't like it, then there is an opportunity to pivot into something else. It's okay to make mistakes. You get better and better as you learn from the experiences you've had throughout your life.
